We really enjoy the small group time of centers, as it targets the exact area of instruction for groups with similiar abilities. This week, the two independent stations required kids to focus on applying their knowledge of 1 to 1 correspondence when counting. The third station was direct instruction from the teacher in literacy awareness.
1. Fish Bubbles: Kids independently spread out fish on the carpet, 1-10. Then they take little glass "bubbles" and count them above the fish. "When the number is bigger, the bubble tower gets higher!"- Sam. For those needing an extra challenge, there were extra fish, numbered 11-20.
2. Literacy Studies with the teacher: Depending on their emergent literacy capabilities, kids work to build simple word families, match letter names and sounds, and compound thier exisitng knowledge of rhyming. These skills will remain the same for several weeks and evolve as the students grow.
3.Counting Books: After the read aloud of Anno's Counting Book and a discussion on touching the objects as you count, the kids understand that numbers actually represent a tangible quantity of something. That some thing- was their choice to draw as they create their own counting book. So long as it is the correct number represented. We are working on numbers 1-12, finishing these books will likely take two weeks.

1. Bean Counting: This activity targets the students ability to appreciate numbers as quantities. Kids count beans into an egg carton with the different "holes" labeled with numbers 0-11. Manipulating the beans helps them visualize the number. An extension required them to complete number omissions in a sentence. For example, 14___ 16, etc.

3. Bird Packet: Students could choose to work alone or together completing this fun packet on birds. Activities include labeling a bird's body parts, picture/ word matching with specific vocabulary, and a maze. This was a fun, "out of the ordinary" activity!

1. Cupcake Math: This activity works on grouping skills and emergent addition in a fun and hands- on way. Kids roll di, dot the cupcakes with those same amounts and add the sum, writing the numerals as well.
