This week we continue our study of 2 dimensional shapes. We have discussed and identified squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, rhombuses, diamonds, trapazoids, hexagons, stars and hearts. Fun activities worked their way into our centers time with more exploration and making observations about these shape's attributes.  One really fun and imaginative activity was when each students blindly chose three shapes from a basket. They must use their imagination to craft an image using these three random shapes. The outcomes are so surprising and refreshing!

Abby sorts geometric shapes.
IMG_0474 (Small).JPG This week we introduced a new math unit: 2D and 3D shapes. We have been incorporating this new subject into many different times in our day. The most exciting time was during Centers where we sorted and tallied blocks based on their similar shapes. We, of course, are still working on our number sense through addition and subtraction and working with money, which is sometimes hard to grasp!

This week was a major math week! In addition to math always incorporated into morning meeting and our ticket to Toyko...all three centers were math topics. We continue to work with coins and coin combinations, as we pretend to "buy" things and come up with exact amounts.

All students had opportunities to complete a 100's chart (shown above) for extra practice writing numerals of course, but also to see the amazing patterns that emerge when completing a 100's chart. Mistakes are caught so quickly when things, "Just don't match up" - Davis.

We also continue to work on addition in fun and hands-on ways. (See small group centers page for more details on this!)
