This week, we started introducting the students to what we call "first grade math". Essentially, we are starting to teach them how to read math sentences, starting with addition. For those learners who are still learning their number id, we modify with objects or other visuals to represent quantities. As always, we weave math problems into all subjects and areas throughout the day - during read aloud, ticket to Tokyo, etc.

This week we continue to work on number quantities and their relationships with each other. We applied this skill this week during whole-group meetings, ticket to Tokyo, and especially during small group centers. Kids were able to play the game of Compare with a partner to distinguish larger and smaller numbers.  0-10.  Another favorite activity is kids working with white boards and either identifying (by circling) or writing bigger, and then small numbers. You learn best by DOING!!!!

We have been working on number sense while following our curriculium of Investigations. More specifically, we are learing about how to compare numbers in relation to each other. We embed activities and games to teach this concept into all parts of our day. We work with children individually, small groups, and as a whole class.
