Math Literature Lesson - Fractions

One of the greatest projects I completed during this course was a math literature lesson. For this project, I found a great children's book that related to mathematics and then created an activity to go with the book. I had the opportunity to read the book to my class and then teach my lesson.

The Book

I chose the book Pizza Counting by Christina Dobson, for my math literature lesson. The book attracted me because it was so colorful and full of interesting pizza facts. I used pizza as my theme throughout the lesson, because even as an adult I still think of pizza when I use fractions. I enjoyed reading the book to the class and it was a great way to introduce this math concept to the students.

Pizza Activity

After reading Pizza Counting to the class, I began my activity. First, I handed out the manipulatives I made for my "students." The little felt pizzas only had 8 slices, so as a supplement I created a "Pizza Fractions" reference sheet for the students to use while completing their pizza worksheet. I made a transparency of the worksheet and assigned a problem to each table of four. After everyone completed their problem, each group came up to the overhead and showed the class how they had solved it. My classmates enjoyed the activity, and I was very proud of the outcome of my project.

I created this page for my students to use as a visual reference when working with fractions.
