Stage 1 Evidence and Artifacts

Analysis of Performance Data

For the analysis of student data, I discussed with my cooperating teaching what skills students still needed to learn for this school year. We determined that it would be best to focus on figurative language in preparation for the PSSAs. Students missed a lot of instruction last year due to the sudden transition to virtual learning and did not take the PSSAs last school year. Based on data from the STAR Assessment that students have already taken several times this school year, we know that many students are either at or below a 7th grade reading level. This level is also evident in their writing on classwork as they struggle to write complete sentences correctly.

Identification of Instructional Needs

Based on the analysis of student performance data, I have determined that it is best to focus on PA Standard CC.1.3.7.F. This standard involves determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in grade level reading and content, including the interpretation of figurative and connotative meanings. In doing so, I will review all types of figurative language but put more emphasis on the ones that students struggled with on the pretest. Focusing on this standard, will improve their reading and writing abilities as they gain a deeper understanding of the use of language.

Identification of Target Population

The target population for this Student Learning Objective project is a group of 18 students, only one of whom has an IEP. This is only one of my cooperating teacher's Reading 7 classes. The other classes of students will receive equivalent instruction in preparation for the PSSAs. However, we feel that this particular group will benefit and show more growth from this instruction as STAR data indicates that many of them have an independent reading level between sixth and eighth grade.

Establishment of Achievement Goals

My intended achievement goal is for the students to have a grade of 70% or higher on the final assessment of figurative language. I expect students to begin with the majority of scores being between 0% and 50% on the pretest. Therefore, after instruction, I expect to see a growth of at least 20% on the post assessment.
