Moon Journal

Content:

This "Moon Journal" was created for GS4401, Science and Science Teaching in the Elementary School, Fall 2007. It was made under the advisement of this course's instructor, Jeff Goodman.

Impact:

In this assignment, I completed a Moon Journal. This assignment can be used for all elementary school grades, K-6. This project helps students understand the different phases of the moon over a given amount of time. This Moon Journal and Moon Journal Reflection can be found attached at the bottom of this page.

Alignment:

This "Moon Journal" met the following North Carolina Standards for Elementary School Teachers:

Standard 2: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in mathematics.

Indicator 2 - Teachers have knowledge of geometry and measurement. Teachers understand construction of simple geometric figures, understand and apply concepts of relative position and relationships and geometric formulas, and model appropriate measurement systems in various settings (standard, nonstandard, and metric system) in measuring length, perimeter, area, capacity, volume, weight, angle, time, money, and temperature.

--This artifact proves that I have knowledge of geometry and measurement. Through the use of the moon journal, I have been able to write descriptions of the appearance of the moon using proper geometry and measurement terms. I also have included the moons relative position to the earth and sun when recognizing the different phases of the moon in my reflection.

Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.

Indicator 3 - Teachers have knowledge of basic earth science concepts including: planetary astronomy, properties of earth materials, earth dynamics and systems, interaction of earth and living systems including management of natural resources and pollution.

--This artifact proves that I have knowledge of basic earth science concepts. In my reflection, I have explained the different phases of the moon and why the moon seems to move across the sky. This shows that I have knowledge about the basic earth science concepts when creating a moon journal.

Standard 12: Working alone, or with arts specialists and/or other qualified arts professionals, elementary teachers are able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum.

--With this artifact, I was able to integrate the arts into the elementary curriculum. Throughout the moon journal, I have illustrated the appearance of the moon at a given time. Illustrating the moon ultimately allowed me to integrate the arts when making a moon journal.
