Online Safety

Content:

This "Rules for Online Safety" attachment was given to me during my student teaching at Mabel Elementary, Spring 2008.

Impact:

My cooperating teacher and I worked with a professional health program called, "Risk Watchers." We organized a time for our class to meet with these professionals to discuss an important issue that students are facing today. Observing a health specialist helped me become aware of major issues relating to children. A "Risk Watchers" representative spoke to my second grade students about rules that the students should follow when they are using the internet. In addition, by being an observer and participate of this lesson, I feel prepared to speak to students in the future about rules concerning online safety.

Alignment:

Observing this health specialist helped me meet the following NCDPI Standards for Elementary Education:

Standard 5: Elementary teachers have an understanding of the major concepts of healthful living.

Indicator 1 - Teachers understand the foundations of good health and help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

-- This artifact shows that I understand the foundations of good health to help students understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. By having my students meet with a health specialist, I am helping my students understand the benefits of using online safety.

Indicator 2 - Teachers are alert to major health issues related to children.

-- This attached artifact proves that I am alert to major health issues such as online safety, relating to children. The attached document lists rules that students show follow when using the internet. Furthermore, the students were asked to sign the rule sheet as if it were a pledge. I believe that this document motivated students to follow internet safety rules and procedures.

Standard 13: Working alone, or with healthful living specialists, elementary teachers create opportunities for student development and practice of skills that contribute to good health.

-- This artifact shows that my cooperating teacher and I organized a time for our second grade class to meet with "Risk Watchers" Health Specialists. These professionals helped my students become aware about online safety.
