Content:
This artifact was created during my student teaching at Mabel Elementary in the Spring of 2008. This brochure was taught under the advisement of my second grade cooperating teacher, Jeanie Ward.
Impact:
This brochure helped students finalize their unit on Antarctica. It was a way for Ms. Ward and I to assess the students on what they have learned. This artifact also provided the students with an opportunity to use a computer. Students were asked to research additional information about Antarctica using Internet Explorer. Furthermore, students became familiar with Microsoft Word as they typed their brochures using this program.
The following North Carolina Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives were met:
Computer/Technology Skills
Competency Goal 1: The learner will understand important issues of a technology-based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies.
Objective 1.02 - Demonstrate correct use of common technology terms.
Objective 1.04 - Recognize individual's rights of ownership of created works.
Objective 1.09 - Recognize individual's rights of ownership to computer-generated work.
Competency Goal 2: The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies.
Objective 2.01 - Recognize, discuss and use the features/functions of computing devices.
Objective 2.05 - Recognize, discuss, and use word processing as a tool to enter/edit, print, and save assignments.
Objective 2.08 - Identify and use menu/tool bar features/functions in word processing documents.
Social Studies
Competency Goal 5: The learner will understand the relationship between people and geography in various communities.
Objective 5.01 - Define geography and use geographic terms to describe landforms, bodies of water, weather, and climate.
- Identify and describe the people, vegetation, and animal life specific to certain regions and describe their interdependence.
Alignment:
This artifact helped me to meet the following NETS-T Technology Standards for teachers:
Standard III. A - Facilitate technology-enhance experiences that address content standards and student technology standards.
-- With this artifact, I have facilitated technology-enhance experiences that address content standards and student technology standards. In the impact section of this page, one will notice the numerous technology and social studies goals and objectives that were met. Technology standards were met by using Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer. Social Studies standards were met by researching Antarctica's weather, location, and animal life.
Standard III. B - Use technology to support learner-centered strategies that address the diverse needs of students.
-- With this artifact, I have used technology to support learner-centered strategies. In that attached document, one will find an area where I describe the additional one-on-one help that I provided for a student to help him/her succeed.
Standard III. C - Apply technology to develop student's higher order skills and creativity.
-- With this artifact, I have allowed the students to use critical thinking and creativity. This brochure ultimately allows the students free choice as to what they want to include in their brochure. For example, the students must include a section on animal life in their brochure. What animals they choose and how they present this information is based on the student's creativity. In addition, allowing the students to choose font, size, and color helped them foster in critical thinking. We advised them that they could choose whatever they wanted, but they needed to keep their audience in mind.
Standard III. D - Manage student learning activities in a technology-enhanced environment.
-- This artifact, took place in Mabel Elementary's computer lab. Students were required to use the safe, appropriate Antarctica web site that was uploaded on Mabel School's home page. This shows that I am capable of managing my student's use of technology.
