I taught students in a second grade classroom at Mabel Elementary how to make rock candy. This was done under the advisement of my cooperating teacher, Jeanie Ward.
Impact:
During our science unit on matter, my students were learning about salt crystals. By researching on the internet, I found ways to expand their learning through the use of rock candy. Students were able to use what they know about salt crystals to make predictions, inferences, and conclusions concerning how rock candy can form. This project helped students apply what they have previously learned.
Alignment:
The Rock Candy project helped me to meet the following NETS-T Technology Standards for Elementary Teachers:
Standard I. B: Demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to abreast of current and emerging technologies.
-- This artifact proves that I have demonstrated continual growth in technology knowledge. I used what I know about finding accurate websites to find a recipe on how to make rock candy. The following website was used: www.exploratorium.ed/cooking/candy/recipe-rockcandy.html
Standard II. C - Identify and locate technology resources and evaluate them for accuracy and stability.
-- Like mentioned before, I have located and evaluated rock candy websites for accuracy and stability. Although I found numerous websites that provided me with recipes, I was able to narrow the choice of websites down by finding the most accurate website.
