Energy Extension

Content:

I created this "Energy Extension" activity in the Spring of 2008. I made this extension to help me meet NC Standards for Elementary Teachers.

Impact:

After studying an unit on the different sources of energy, I found an activity that students can participate it in that ultimately integrates math, science, and social studies. Students will work to read a bar graph entitled, "United States Energy Production." Students will explore a bar graph, answer essential guiding questions, and participate in a discussion. I believe that this activity will allow the student to grow in different content areas.

Alignment:

This "Energy Extension" activity helps me to meet the following NC Standards for Elementary Teachers:

Standard 11: Elementary teachers connect social studies with the broad curriculum.

Indicator 1 - Teachers incorporate communication in their lessons.

-- This artifact proves that I have incorporated communication in my lessons. In the document attached, one will find detailed directions that clearly communicates the responsibility that the students have. For example, the directions states that the students need to explore the graph, answer questions, and be prepared for a discussion.

Indicator 3 - Teachers enhance social studies lessons by making connections with scientific discoveries and technological innovations.

-- This artifact shows that I have enhanced a social studies lesson by making connections with scientific discoveries and technological innovations. The activity given to the students enables them to learn about the production of energy over the years.

Indicator 4 - Teachers incorporate mathematics in their social studies lessons.

-- With this artifact, students are using mathematics in their social studies lesson by reading a bar graph. At the end of this extension, students will walk away having a better understanding of how to read a graph.

Indicator 5 - Teachers incorporate technology skills in their social studies lessons through collecting data, organizing and sorting data, and displaying data in a variety of ways.

-- This artifact shows that I have incorporated technology skills by displaying data through the use of a bar graph. I used the internet to research the production of energy. I then created a worksheet and displayed the data I gathered.
