Reflection

Reflection: EDTC 6139 Selection and Integration of Multimedia for PreK-12 Schools

 1. State the competency, or standard that is appropriate for your degree and licensure area. This could be standards for 077 licensure or ISTE Advanced Standards for Technology Facilitators. When appropriate you may use standards from the Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT). Choose one or two standards that most representative of your artifact. The reflection should include discussion for each of the standards you’ve identified for the artifact.

TF-VI Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues

Educational technology facilitators understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in PK-12 schools and assist teachers in applying that understanding in their practice.

Educational technology facilitators:

B. Apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds,

characteristics, and abilities. Candidates:

1. assist teachers in selecting and applying appropriate technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.

.

2. Describe requirements for your artifact. What was assigned and how did you complete the project. Only 100 to 150 words are needed for this section. Include theoretical base for what you did in the project. Include references to textbook authors, readings, and online resources discussed in your course.

EDTC 6139 Selection and Integration of Multimedia for PreK-12 Schools was taught in Summer II 2013 by Dr. Ken Luterbach.  The artifact for this course was to locate and evaluate multimedia resources to be used by classroom teachers.  We created a data base of resources that were both web based and non-web base.  Each resource was then matched with Common Core and NC Essential Standards and grade level.

The text for this course was Instructional Technology and Media for Learning, 10th edition by Smaldino, Lowther and Russell.  This text described the ASSURE model of lesson planning to guide teachers in the integration of technology and guidelines for the selection of media, materials and technology.  The text provided criteria for when the use of multimedia is best used to assist learning and how to evaluate different types of multimedia.

3. Explain how your artifact is a good example of the objective, competency, or standard. Defend your evidence as if you were a lawyer defending the validity of evidence submitted for the trial. Include references to theory in Instructional Design and Technology.

This artifact is not simply a compilation of resources for teachers.  Each entry has been evaluated on its merits and value for the use in preK-12 classrooms.  The resources are matched with NC Essential and Common Core Standards as well as for the use with diverse learners. Suggestions for using the resource are provided.  Operating system requirements are listed as well.  Therefore this resource addresses Standard TF-VI which states that Educational Technology Facilitators “assist teachers in selecting and applying appropriate technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities (ISTE Advanced Standards for Technology Facilitators, Standard TF-VI, 2001).

Furthermore, these resources assist students in acquiring 21 century skills and help teachers to address the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NET-S).  For example resources in the data base such as Penzu and Popplet foster creativity and innovation as well as collaboration. Discovery for Kids and the British Museum resources foster critical thinking and problem solving as well as research and information fluency (ISTE, 2014).

Smaldino, Lowther and Russell (2012) suggest teachers use the ASSURE model to plan for technology integration.  The second S in this model stands for “select strategies, technology, media and materials” (Smaldino, Lowther, & Russell, 2012, p39).  This artifact enables teachers to choose resources that have already been identify as educationally sound for use in the classroom and matched to state standards.

.

4. Discuss how you might change the content, strategy, or design of the artifact. If you see no need for change, elaborate on the artifact is a good exemplar for the competency or standard.

The artifact is organized in a table format and if I were to do this again I would organize the information in a spreadsheet or perhaps a live binder in order to separate the middle and high school resources in order to make it more user friendly and to be able to easily add to the resource in an organized fashion.  For the purposes of this class the table worked just fine because we were given a definite amount of resources to include.  However, if I were to actually use this resource with teachers and add to it over time another format would be more practical.  A separate page for subject area and grade level would make the entries faster to locate as opposed to perusing through the entire data base to find something you could use.

5. Discuss how the artifact is representative of future career goals and plans.

In my career as a technology facilitator in the public school system I will be called upon by teachers to recommend resources for technology integration.  Maintaining a ready-made bank of such resources will be necessary to quickly and efficiently support the teachers I serve.  Teachers will be assured that these resources have been evaluated by a professional for their quality and matched to standards in advance.
