Context
I worked with a classmate, Sarahanne, to write these two math lessons during the fall semester of 2005 at Appalachian State University. These lessons were taught around Thanksgiving time to a Kindergarten class at W.A. Young Elementary in Morganton, NC. The class was learning about AB patterns and learning to read a chart at the time I wrote these lessons. After I taught both lessons, I reflected on my teaching and student learning. Sarahanne also taught both lessons in her classroom and we compared notes on how the students performed.
Impact
I will use these lessons in the future because my students loves making turkeys around Thanksgiving. It is not easy to hold 5 year olds' attention for long periods of time. These Kindergarten students enjoyed these math lessons that incorporated art. In my reflection, I stated that it is amazing what students can learn in just 30 minutes, which is so true. I will also compare notes with other teachers in the future for extra suggestions for improvement.
Alignment
I met Standard 2, Indicator 2 by having my students construct simple geometric figures (turkeys).
I met Standard 2, Indicator 3 by having students create and extend an AB pattern with their turkey feathers and then having them share their pattern with their classmates.
