Hispanic Culture and Scientology Religion
Context
During the fall semester of 2005, for Dr. Anne Marie Clark's Diversity class, we were required to research a culture other than our own. I chose to research 10 Hispanic children's books and websites that would help educate teachers about this culture. We were also required to research a religion other than our own with two partners. My group chose to research the religion Sciencetology. Then I shared this information with my classmates and provided handouts for their future use as teachers.
Impact
As teachers, it is very important that we are educated and aware of our diverse nation. Each child should feel comfortable in their classroom. When teachers have books about a variety of cultures present in the classroom, students may feel more at home. As a future teacher, I will always make sure that my classroom library has a variety of children's literature from different cultures. I will also make myself aware of all types of religions so that I may understand where my students' beliefs and values stand.
Alignment
I have met Standard 1, Indicator 2 by understanding the challanges of learning the English language if it is not your primary language.
I have met Standard 14, Indicator 1 by educating myself about diversity such as the Hispanic culture and Sciencetology religion.
I have met Standard 14, Indicator 4 by researching other cultures and languages so that I may better understand family roles.
I have met Standard 14, Indicator 5 by supplying my future students with a variety of books from different cultures. Because I have educated myself, my students will also be educated in knowing that we should all be created equal.
