Organisms Text Discussion

Context:

This assignment was completed in my GS 4401 class under the instruction of Dr. Jeff Goodman during the fall of 2007. This activity could be used in a classroom to help students understand the concepts behind evolution and natural selection.

Impact:

After reading the book One Place in a Tree students completed an activity where they observe trees found in their own environment and compare them to the one found in the book. Using a Venn Diagram students will discuss in groups their findings and talk about why trees are so important to the particular animals/insects they found.  As a class there will be discussion about the life cycle and why it was particularly important in the story.

Alignment:

I meet Standard 3 indicator 1 by displaying a basic knowledge of natural selection and adaptations throughout the activities produced based on the book. I knowledge the importance of teaching ideas such as evolution so that students can make decisions based on such information.

I met Standard 3 indicator 4 by understand why issues such as evolution are controversial and how to approach such topics in a manner that is respectful and based on facts and not opinions.

NC- North Carolina DPI Elementary Education Specialty Area Standards
Standard: Standard 3: Elementary teachers have a broad knowledge and understanding of the major concepts in science.
Indicator: Indicator 1: Teachers have knowledge of basic life science concepts including:
Detail: Characteristics of living things
Detail: Diversity of organisms and their environments
Detail: Life cycles, mutations, and adaptations
Detail: Structure and function of plants, animals, and their parts
Detail: Growth and development of organisms
Detail: Health and human biology
Detail: Relationship between humans, organisms, and the environment (ecology)
Indicator: Indicator 4: Teachers have knowledge of controversial issues and how they impact learning, including evolution and genetics.
