Math Lessons

Context:

This assignment was completed for CI 4030 during block II under the advisement of Betty Dishman during the fall of 2007. This assignment includes three lessons based on types of graphs, a reflection and student work. These lesson were taught during my internship in third grade at Westwood Elementary in West Jefferson, North Carolina.

Impact:

During the teaching of these lessons students reviewed three types of graphs including bar graphs, line plots and pictographs. Using the North Carolina Standard Course of Study I designed three lessons that would teach parts of a graph and when it is appropriate to use each type of graph. Students were able to collect data and experiment with different graphs. By collecting data and learning about the different types of graphs students gained an understanding that graphs compare data in many different ways.

Alignment:

I met NC DPI Standard 2 indicator 4 by creating lessons that cover showing data through different types of graphs. These lessons were aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for third grade and I used the adopted text book for third grade as a reference guide for creating these lessons.

I met NC DPI Standard 2 indicator 3 by using geographical vocabulary in my lesson plan and by gaining a basic understanding of geographical concepts based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

I met NC DPI Standard 7 indicator 1 by creating lessons that were aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for third grade using goal 4 objective 4.01.

I met NC DPI Standard 7 indicator 3 by creating charts and discussions that tap into students prior knowledge before I taught the lesson and by using the launch, explore and summarize lesson plan format.

I met NC DPI Standard 7 indicator 5 by implementing classroom management strategies into my lesson plans and using group work to help students peer-tutor one another while working on assignments.

I met NC DPI Standard 9 indicator 3 by creating lesson plans that are on grade level and using terminology when teaching my lessons.
