Reading Assessment

Context:

This assignment was completed during my internship at Westwood Elementary in West Jefferson, North Carolina in the fall of 2007 under the advisement of Dr. Ellen Pesko. This reading assessment was conducted in a third grade classroom with a lower level reader. This assignment was intended to assess a child's reading level and find books and differentiated instruction to help improve the child's reading ability.

Impact:

This assignment helped me as a future teacher work on assessing reading abilities using a specific reading inventory outline. I was able to assess the child's reading ability and write a mock letter to the parent to that would inform the parents of the next step for improving reading comprehension. This assignment also allowed me to research books that would be appropriate for this child's reading level and help to improve this level as well.

Alignment:

I met NC DPI Standard 1 indicator one by assess the developmental stage of the child and reading level to find a instructional reading level that would help in all areas of reading especially comprehension.

I met NC DPI Standard 1 indicator 7 by acknowledging that children's vocabulary and oral language changes over time and documented that change.

I met NC DPI Standard 1 indicator 8 by creating an assessment and a list of books and activities that can further develop oral compositions processes.

I met NC DPI Standard 7 indicator 4 by using this reading assessment to create specific strategies for instruction to promote comprehension in all subject areas.

I met NC DPI Standard 8 indicator 1 by using my teaching methods to promote standard English and speaking skills. I also met this standard by differentiating instruction to meet the needs of students who are below grade level.
