Context:
This unit was created for my RE 4030 class under the advisement of Dr. Ellen Pesko during the fall of 2007. This unit was created for 5th grade and was based around the book The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson.
Impact:
This unit was created around the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. A variety of books were collected to do a unit around different types of families with the main text being The Great Gilly Hopkins. There are many activities within the unit that encourage students to write and reflect on different types of families according to the literature.

I met NC DPI Standard 8 indicator 2 by creating a unit that requires comprehension of the book to complete activities and activities that challenge students to monitor their comprehension of the book and activities.
