Philosophy of Child Development

IntroD.gif

Below is my philosophy about child development.  It is important that teachers realize there is more to teaching than just to the child's brain, but there needs to be teaching the child as a whole.  I enjoyed writing this paper because I was able to fully express how I can use my newly found knowledge of children's development within the classroom.

Unlocking the Door of Opportunity

A teacher has one of the most rewarding jobs in society.  I will have the opportunity to prepare the next generation.  I will instruct students on a range of subjects including math, reading, writing, and science.  I will also be expected to teach certain skills and life lessons to students.  Parents want their children to have numerous opportunities, but they know that this can only happen if their child receives a strong education.  I know that it is my responsibility, as a future educator, to ensure that children are ready with the knowledge and ability to survive in the world.  With that responsibility, it is important that I assist in furthering the development of my students cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally.  These four keys are essential to unlocking the door of opportunity to our children.

<font color=purple>Cognitive

The cognitive development of a child, which involves remembering, imagining, thinking, reasoning, and learning, plays an optimal part in their life.  One way to ensure my students are strengthened in intellectual activity, is allowing them to be active participants within class lessons.  To do this, I will employ three learning techniques that help children understand the material.  Giving time for cooperative learning lets children work with partners and in groups for assignments, becoming aware of others’ views and beginning to form their own opinions.  Another method I would utilize is discovery learning.  This is when a child works independently to figure out problems, such as doing an individual worksheet or creating their own science project.  This method strongly boosts their self-esteem and academic performance.  The third technique I will incorporate into my classroom is generative learning, which teaches students how to blend existing information and new information together through problem solving.  I would utilize technology and music, with this type of learning, which has shown to aid in brain development.  These three methods create active participation from children allowing for heightened cognitive development in the classroom, ultimately helping them to learn the required material in ways that are enjoyable.

<font color=purple>Physical

PhysicalD.gif

Although the cognitive development of a child is important, the physical development of a child plays a vital role in their life as well.  This area includes not only the growing and changing of the body, but involves motor skills and physiological development which influences a child’s health, nutrition, and future illnesses.  As a teacher, I need to show my students that having healthy habits is essential for having a healthy life.  One way I can do this is to never take away a child’s recess.  I need to find alternative methods of discipline because I believe a child needs time away from the classroom to relieve stress and to move around.  This will strengthen their large motor skills, such as jumping, running, and skipping, and it will also allow them to develop a physical routine which will make them less likely to become inactive adults.  I will make sure some of my lessons give children an opportunity to move around the classroom.  Thinking and movement are processed by the same area of the brain, and physically involving children within the classroom activities will improve their attention span and performance.  To further stress the importance of being healthy, I will integrate nutritional principles into my lessons.  I need to teach my children about nutritious foods and proper exercise.  To model this principle, I will reduce the amount of treats I give them by rewarding their accomplishments with other items, such as small toys or stickers.  I believe that by being a strong example to my students, they will realize the importance of having a healthy lifestyle.

<font color=purple>Social

SocialD.gif

Another domain that is significant in a child’s life is how they socialize.  One item that may affect how a child develops socially is their understanding of prejudices.  I want to make my students aware of various ethnic groups, religions, and other cultural differences that exist.  I need to encourage them not to judge others based upon outward attributes, but stress the importance of getting to know one another’s internal qualities.  I can help them do this by giving them class time for group work.  I will pair the students up, making sure that they are with different people.  This gives children an opportunity to learn about each other, and to gain a deeper understanding of the differences that exist.  Becoming familiar with diverse cultures and beliefs now, will distance children from developing specific mind sets and prejudices about certain people later in life.  Another way I can aid in a child’s social development is to have every student spotlighted throughout the year, where they tell about themselves and their background.  This will not only introduce the student to the rest of the class, but will also improve their self-confidence and self-esteem needed to become more sociable.  By sharing various cultures and prejudices with my students, they will learn to include everyone and have an increase in social opportunities.

<font color=purple>Emotional

EmotionalD.gif

The emotional development of a child plays a major role in their life.  Children all handle new situations differently because they all come from different life situations.  I believe, as a teacher, that I should do my best to ensure that my students have a positive school experience by focusing on three main areas: praise, the environment, and respect.  I will make sure to praise my students for their good work by complimenting them and displaying their work in the classroom.  I want to rely on positive reinforcement because it has been shown to increase a child’s self-esteem and to make the same behavior likely to reoccur.  Communication with parents about their child’s growing skills and talents is important because the child will receive praise at home as well as at school.  The second area to focus on is creating a safe, comfortable environment for children.  I want my students to know that I have time to listen to them, and help them with their struggles.  I will make myself available for them, and I will try to become aware of what is occurring in their life, both at school and at home.  The third item to help my students have a wonderful emotional experience is having respect within the classroom.  I will treat all my students with high regard, but I expect them to treat each other and myself the same as well.  I will only allow positive comments from my students, and I will be a good example of this by displaying a happy disposition at all times.  Respect, praise, and a positive environment work together, to ensure a more emotionally-stable environment for my students.

<font color=purple>More Opportunities

ConclusionD.gif

By focusing on the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of my students, I will prepare them for the future because these four keys are essential to unlocking the door of opportunity for our children.  I can strengthen their development, by allowing children to be active participants, teaching the importance of healthy lifestyles, helping students understand prejudices, and giving children a positive school experience.  This provides my students a choice for different paths to take during their life’s journey, as they will be highly developed in all four domains, ultimately leading to better preparation for entering the world.  As a future educator, I know it is my job to teach the whole child because, as Cindy Chovich once said, “we might not know what the future holds, but we know who holds it.”
