TPE 2: Monitoring Student Learning During Instruction
Overview: During the writing persuasive writing unit, students will be asked to use persuasion techniques and will be introduced to counter arguments. Students will be given an item and in groups of 7-8, they will need to construct a well-written paragraph that will persuade me to buy their item. They will use a graphic organizer to brainstorm (I will provide it) and then will write a single paragraph as a group. After they have finished writing, they will read their paragraphs to me in front of the class, and after they "pitch" their product, the class will analyze the reasons each group gave and the counter arguments they provide.
Justification for TPE 2: During the group work, I will circulate and observe how each group is filling out their graphic organizer. I will make sure that every student is contributing and that groups are working well together. In addition, I will give hypothetical reasons why I will not want to buy their product and urge them to come up with reasons to convince be to buy their product despite my reasoning. After this check-in, I will ask students to finish collaborating with their group and present their final argument. They must convince me and the rest of the class to buy their product. The informal teacher observation is really important in this lesson because I need to make sure students are on task and working together in a cooperative manner.
