The most important way I used the data I collected from formative assessments and my pre-assessment was to help shape my daily lesson plans. Especially through my formative assessments I was able to gauge where my students' learning was at and additionally help track their knowledge. I then was able to adjust my daily teachings and figure out which concepts needed to be gone over at a greater degree or which concepts students knew and did not need more time on. Although, I finished my unit in six days I did get to see how they would apply PEMDAS to other concepts. Although the average post-assessment score was 59% I still feel pretty confident that the majority of students could go out into the math world and apply PEMDAS to other mathematical concepts. I had 3 students that severely dropped the average overall percentage, and 1 of them was able to bring his score up and master the concept. If his re-do test score was part of my data then the average would be higher. Formative assessments were the best way I tracked students. I know some students are bad test takers so having informal, and non-graded ways to track learning was very important to me.
My supervising teacher teaches other sections of 6th grade Math I and within her re-teaching unit she simply extended teaching PEMDAS because students did not understand the concept, and it is a vital piece of mathematical knowledge. My second period class did not extend the teaching of PEMDAS because my supervising teacher and I felt it was not a necessity and students grasped the concept. If I were going to continue teaching my class, I would have spent time with the students that did not master the concept of PEMDAS and work with them individually during individual work time. I would want to make sure that this concept is mastered because it is vital to algebra and other later math classes. PEMDAS is a foundational concept.
One thing that I probably would change for my next teaching experience is to give directions is as many ways as possible. I usually gave directions verbally, but next time providing images, and writing the directions down as well as giving them verbally would be very beneficial for students. Students may not all be auditory learners and may need to see the directions. I started doing that the last few days of my teaching which really helped focus the students and I think my future self would benefit greatly. Additionally, I learned that tracking through formative assessment is very valuable data and that I will always use them to adjust my teaching and track the learning of my students.
