I consistently used formative assessments. For example, when I did warm-ups I always went over the answer and how to get to the answers. I would go over each question step-by-step. This way students would not be left in the dark about how to solve a problem. This was especially important because warm-up questions most of the time covered the previous day's lessons and hopefully would help students understand the concept.
Another example, where I gave feedback with students' work was worksheets. I would make it a point to get the worksheet back to the student within a day or two (which is why I do not possess any copies of students' worksheet work) and also made sure the students knew which questions were answered correctly and incorrectly and did not just have a score. If students got the answer wrong I would find the step or part of the equation the student got wrong and indicate how they would do it the right way.
Additionally, the students that I felt were not getting the concept or not turning in work I would nag for them to come in during lunch or after school, and students did. I had a lot of individual time with students after school to help them understand concepts. I have decided to make myself as available as humanly possible. I will make sure students know I am available for help and that I am willing to help them understand whatever concept they need help on.
I also attended parent-teacher conferences where I was able to talk with parents of my students. At conferences students and parents were able to see students grades and we discussed behaviors in class and which concepts students mastered and which they were struggling in. The conferences were very detailed. I had 8 of my 15 students and their parents show up to conferences. Conferences were after my 10 days of teaching and I had a clear picture of what the students were doing well in and what they were struggling with. Other than the conferences I did not contact parents at home. No student posed any real issue in class. When I have my own classroom that will change. I will try and contact every parent or guardian at least once to try even if students are doing well. I want to make contact with students and their families with good and bad behaviors. I believe students and their parents know that I realize their student can exhibit both behaviors and that I want them to know I care about their learning and their class behaviors.
I vow to give timely feedback to students in regards to their work and also connect with as many parents, as often as possible.
