Composition Theory

This course is an introduction to research and scholarship shaping the theory and practice of writing and the teaching of writing. While Poetics provides an understanding of the muse and society's influence on creative thought, Composition Theory covers the major philosophies of composing, studies in language, and the rhetoric behind writing and writing technologies.

Through various analytical papers, readings of peer-reviewed articles and plentiful research, students become familiar with notable journals of composition and rhetoric. The course gives students an understanding how writing can be applied in any discipline, and challenges them to think critically about the technologies used in the craft. With a specific focus in pedagogy, this course allows students to identify methods of effective teaching in writing and beyond.
