What is Environmental Studies?

After going to a high school for environmental science, I decided to go to college and minor in environmental studies. Though they sound similar, these programs are very different in their approach to the environment.

While environmental science is about learning how to measure changes in the environment, natural or otherwise, with the collection and analysis of physical data, environmental studies is concerned by the historical, social and political elements effecting and being effected by the environment and environmental changes. I choose to pursue the latter as to influence my writing.

At Ithaca College, an environmental studies minor must take several science courses (including chemistry, biology and environmental science) and then a minimum of 12 credits of environmental electives in the humanities. For my electives I took Sustainable Principles and Practices,  Cultural Anthropology, History of American Environmental Thought, Writing as a Naturalist, Social Justice and Sustainability and Gardening.
