Teaching Philosophy/Motto

Two favorite quotes, one from past history and one from recent history:

<> " To have another language is to possess a second soul."  -- Charlemagne

<> " If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.  If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart." -- Nelson Mandela

Regardless of the time, place, or culture into which one was born, possessing knowledge of language and customs practiced by other World Cultures is essential if one hopes to connect in positive ways as a tourist, a student, a host for a foreign visitor, a college dorm mate, a fellow worker, a business partner, or any number of other possible ways.

As a quatrilingual adult, a globe trekker, and a longtime instructor of Spanish and French, I wish to share my love of humanity by sharing linguistic knowledge and cultural experiences.  I collaborate with Department colleagues as we target academic lessons to prepare our students to use the most highly acceptable elements of verbal, written, and kinesthetic communication that may lead to positive connections with people of other cultures.
