Examples of My Work

The intersectionality and positionality papers helped me articulate my identities and analyze how those identities create a specific lens for how I interpret the world and interact with people. This reflective process was one way of bringing awareness to normative assumptions. As a result I am able to see my own biases as impressed on by these assumptions. This exercise was important to my development as a higher education professional because of how it will help me interpersonally work with students. For instance, it will help me guide students through reflecting on their own social identity development process. A second benefit is how my social identity awareness will help me create student programming. As mentioned on the "Application to Higher Education" page, the history of how people have responded to different social identities influence how students may engage or refrain from programming. Lastly, reflection on my own social identities can influence how I work to implement social justice practices at the institutional level. Since socialization of privilege and oppression is systematic, working with the institution to enact more socially just practices will have a more substantial impact of cultural change within an institution.
