Application to Higher Education

This project helped me apply course content to the field of leadership development. A theme that surfaced from our research was how to present leadership development in a broad context. Historically leadership is seen as a position and reserved for those who identify as white, male, and middle class. One example of how I learned to market this type of programming differently is by changing the language. For example, I did not realize the term leadership was a barrier for some students. A professor we spoke with said he worked with Native American students who chose to disassociate with leadership programming because of the history of colonization. This project also taught me to continue to engage students. Intentional feedback from a variety of students will help me continue to revise practices that create a narrow appeal to students. Lastly I learned how social justice work is overwhelming but worth the effort. There will never be an end point. This is why it is important to see creating a socially just higher education environment is a process and not finalized product.
