Biography

 

Katherine DeSilva is a Special Education, Health/Family and Consumer Science and Visual Art Teacher in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  She received her B.F.A. in Communication Design from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her M.S. in Special Education from Western Governors University (anticipated 2012). She is an active and resourceful teacher.  Katherine’s teaching style reflects her previous career experiences in the home improvement industry and in marketing and design.  She has used her fine art training as a graphic designer, marketing specialist, kitchen and bath designer and flooring installer in the Greater Boston area.  She then increased her design work to include a number of clients that worked with disabled youth, this lead to a career change with a wealth of meaning.
 
She uses her broad background to bring real life problem solving and creativity to lessons.  Katherine is also experienced in working with children with behavior disorders and children who have been taken out of the home for care and protection.  She is trained in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), the sanctuary model for trauma treatment, boundaries, and as a Mandatory Reporter by the Massachusetts Department of Children & Families. She is also has current certification in CPR, first aid, and food safety.  Her background in available social services dovetails with the needs of many special education teachers.
 
Ms. DeSilva is a licensed educator for visual art (K-8 & 6-12), elementary education and moderate disabilities special education (K-8 & 6-12.)  She is currently working on her certification in Instructional Technology, a long time passion.
