Standard #2: Direct Instruction
Standard #2: I created this kindergarten lesson on counting to 10 utilizing direct instruction. Direct instruction is a teaching strategy that can be used for all learners regardless of abilities. Direct instruction involves the teacher explicitly teaching and modeling each step of a taught concept. Creating a lesson utilizing the phases of direct instruction (Clarify Goals and Establish Set, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Check for Understanding, and Extended Practice) gave me a better understanding of how to gear lessons to meet the need of students whom learn best by explicit modeling.

Standard #2: Strategy Instruction
Standard #2: I created this lesson plan utilizing strategy instruction for EDU 703. Strategy instruction is a student centered teaching technique. This form of instruction is a technique that benefits all students regardless of ability. Strategy instruction teaches students techniques and study skills while also teaching a new concept. This form of instruction teaches students to apply study skills to the material being taught. I created my lesson plan utilizing strategy instruction for a kindergarten classroom. The lesson was on utilizing the number grid. The lesson addressed the eight stages of strategy instruction; 1. Pretest and Make Commitments, 2. Describe the Strategy, 3. Model the Strategy, 4. Verbal Elaboration, 5. Controlled Practice and Feedback, 6. Advanced Practice and Feedback, 7. Confirm Acquisition, and 8. Generalization. This activity illustrated the need to teach students of all needs how to utilize strategies (such as the number grid) to solve problems
