Wilderness nutrition/ Backpacking Food
Davy and Jami Houle
This course will focus on eating during wilderness activity. While a balanced diet is important, this session will be about high caloric intake and how to lighten your load by understanding how many calories are needed to keep your body fueled. We will emphasize how to decide what foods to take with you on the trail. The decision is based on 6 categories:
1-Calorie density
2-Taste
3-Prep time
4-Size
5-Cost
6-Nutrition
There will be hands on activities, sample meals, question and answer time, and some lecture.
Davy and Jami Houle have been married for 15 years and have 2 children age 10 and 7. Our favorite activities to do happen outside with each other and kids come on most adventures with us. We are both school teachers and spend every second we can exploring the world. We usually find ourselves out under the stars 60-90 nights per year. We have thousands of miles backpacking in Utah, Alaska, Greenland, California, Costa Rica, Belize, and Peru. We spend much of our time in the summer guiding canyoneering trips, backpacking, and off-roading in Moab.
