History of Education
The history and progress of education from 1900 to the beginning of the Cold War has grown significantly. Did you know that in 1900, 50% of kids were in school and had an average of 5 years of schooling? Dewey, the father of progressive education, believed that children learned by doing and teachers should exercise their students’ minds while they learn. The film touches on subject such as IQ testing, and college classes and programs. Throughout the years when schooling was growing and developing, students stayed in school longer and there was a higher percent for graduation. There was a struggle between whether to teach to what the students can use in life, such as, family life, hygiene, and health or to teach to the books with the regular subjects, such as math, science, and English. Throughout the video I learned many facts to add to my teaching philosophy:
¶ As a teacher, I will create a warm and welcoming environment to help my students learn better.
¶ I believe that students should be able to make their own decision on the career path they wish to peruse.
¶ I believe that students should take a variety of subject and classes to create a well rounded education for themselves.
¶ I believe that each teacher should celebrate every culture with all the students. This will widen their eyes and open their minds to clear discrimination.
