“We come in all shapes, colors, and sizes, therefore make sure every student is comfortable,” Dr. Janel wisely stated. Through the many touching stories of Dr. Janel’s journey, she has witnessed many of the African American stereotypes and discrimination first hand. As an African American student, she realized how cruel and hurtful many students can be with their racially damaging language. Through her stories, she encouraged me to be a stronger teacher and to strive to teach the many diverse students well. I have learned great insight for teaching in my classroom:
« I will make sure every student feels comfortable so they will perform better in school.
« Spending time explaining and talking about stereotypes and discrimination to my class will help create a community and a great bond among students.
« I will not ignore racially harmful language, I will teach my students to compliment others and create a community of bond and understanding.
