A creative, colorful, inviting, and interestingly decorated classroom library corner is of utmost importance to young readers and to promote the love for reading. If kindergarteners have an inviting corner to read, they would be more inclined to want to go to the reading corner to read than other areas of the classroom.
The Kindergarten Reading Jungle that I have created is made up of six components:
1. 3-D tree made out of construction paper stapled to the wall. This makes the reading jungle come alive with the books in the tree and creates a sense of adventure and imagination for the book corner.
2. The book related posters. Posters complete the book corner, offering printed knowledge about books, authors, and book events.
3. Teacher chair. This is where I will sit when I have my designated reading time for the day. The students will know that each day we will sit and read book in this area.
4. Fiction and non-fiction books as well as other books that are not picture books and that are appropriate for kindergarten. This is where the books will be stored that are not picture books.
5. Picture book shelf. Picture books are extremely important for young growing readers to develop their love and understand for books and reading. My picture book collection should be larger given the age group, but I still want to have variety of books to offer my kindergarten class.
6. Seating with a rug and bean bags. The seating area will have a large rug especially for the reading area, as well as a few bean bags for individual reading time. The bean bags will not be for the daily class reading, but just for free time in the reading jungle.
