Excel is a Microsoft Office tool that can be used to create a variety of  record keeping documents as well as a tool for teaching and learning! I created this fourth grade lesson on weather utilizing Excel, Word, and the internet.

¢           Science Standard

o       Strand 6:  Earth and Space Science

o       Concept 3:  Changes in Earth and Sky

o       PO 3.  Differentiate between weather and climate as they relate to the southwestern United States.

¢           Social Studies Standard
        
o       Essentials Grades 4-8

       o       Climate:  6SC-E8. Describe and model large-scale and local weather systems

¢           Technology Standard

o       Essentials Grades 4-8

o       3T-E2. Use a variety of technology tools for data collection and analysis

o       PO 1. Use technology device(s) to collect and record data (e.g., science probe, graphing calculator, PDA {personal digital assistant}, alternative keyboards, webcams, GPS and Internet)

o       PO 2. Create and use a spreadsheet to analyze data (e.g., use formulas, create charts and graphs)

o       PO 3. Create a database with multiple fields to manipulate data in a variety of ways (e.g., sort, merge, list and report)

o       Strand 2:  Writing Elements

o       Concept 2:  Organization

o       PO 1.  Use a structure that fits the type of writing (e.g., letter format, narrative, lines of poetry).

o       PO 1.  Use a variety of specific and accurate words that effectively convey the intended message.

¢           Go outside and have all students write down an educated guess for the high and low for that day then look it up on the internet.

¢           The students will research data needed on the internet, learn how to take the average, minimum, maximum of a set of data, and write a poem of a type of weather.

¢           Students will have the opportunity to pick partners and then they will pick a city and state out of a bowl.

¢           Students will research the weather for any month in the last year for their city and state and record it.

¢           Students will make an Excel spreadsheet for their recorded data

¢           Take the average, minimum, and maximum for their recorded data

¢           Students will create a graph in Excel from their data

¢           Students will compose a poem about the main source of weather in their city and state

¢           Students will present their poem, Excel spreadsheet, and graph
