Philosophy

Math can be a scary subject for most students. When presented with a math problem, students usually turn away or get upset even before they start. That frustration comes from the aggravation and disappointment of failure from many generations. Math is growing with every year which makes it difficult for students and parents to understand and keep up with the assortment of math concepts. A Chinese Proverb once stated, “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.” As a teacher, I have to teach students math in many different forms in order for them to “do” and succeed in understanding. The math learning environment in my classroom needs to be exciting and colorful with many resources and a variety of teaching styles that can be used to get each student’s attention. My influence as a teacher, as well as parent involvement is important to keep each student’s confidence level up. As a teacher, I will create many diverse lessons to make sure my students enjoy and learn to love math.

Since math will be a big part of my day, I want to develop a strong math learning environment in my classroom. In my math section, I will have a variety of math resources to encourage students to enjoy and learn to love math. I want to create a positive math environment to encourage students to enjoy math. Math is a subject that should be taken step by step, in order to learn effectively and should not be rushed. Math can also be a time of discovery for the students to figure out the concepts and reasons behind each lesson. I will make myself available to my students to before and after school as well as during recess and lunch if any one is having difficulties.

j0283955.gif Resources are important in any teacher’s classroom. Using a variety of resources to teach a math lesson can keep the student’s attention while teaching the standards. A creative resource can turn a boring math lesson into a positive learning experience for all. One resource that I will always use in my classroom is technology. Teaching math with technology will make the students interested in math and help them to learn. I will introduce many safe internet websites that teach students wonderful interactive math lessons. I will send a newsletter home to the parents with the interactive math websites in order for the students to work with their parents on the websites. This will promote positive parental involvement along with reassuring them of the safety of the sites. Utilizing the interactive math websites will also contribute to the students’ proficiency on the computer. I will use many manipulatives to reinforce a topic for the students’ hands on practice.

Teaching math the same boring way is going to change starting with my classroom.  I will create lessons to apply to auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners in order to keep the student’s attention and to help each student learn to love math. I will teach in groups with cooperative learning which will teach each student about teamwork. Student will also work with a partner as well as individuals, but come together in the end for a common goal. Each student has individual needs and different ways of learning therefore, as a teacher, I will teach with a variety of teaching styles.

j0174963.jpg Robert M. Hutchins stated, “It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts…it is to teach them to think.” As a teacher, my influence is very important, therefore when I teach math, I will have a positive enthusiastic attitude and a smile on my face. I will create enjoyable lessons which include the standards as well as showing my students that I enjoy math so they will follow my lead and become one step further to loving math.

Through my many teaching strategies, creative resources, exciting math environment, and my influence as a teacher, I will always remember as my final result to make math entertaining and enjoyable for students. I will check to see if my students are smiling as well as learning. If they are having fun while learning math, they will not realize how much they know.  Students will retain more than during most math lessons and be having a great time doing it.  My goal as a teacher is to teach students math so they will learn to love math.
