The "Animals and their Adaptations" lesson was created for CI 4900, Student Teaching, during the Spring 2008 semester. It was created under the advisement of Dr. Jane Norwood, as a lesson for the Science Unit, Animals within the classroom. The lesson was implemented at Elizabeth Lane Elementary School in Ms. Leona Ingram's Fourth Grade Classroom as a lesson within the five-week, Animals Unit. The lesson was created with collaboration with Leona Ingram.
Impact of Student Learning
The "Animals and their Adaptations" lesson was created to allow students to experience Science through a series of mini-lessons incorporating technology, art and science together. Students learned how animals adapt to their surroundings by creating a moth that adapted to the surroundings they created. Each student had to design their moth to 'blend in' and adapt to the surroundings within the classroom; then design a moth to adapt to surroundings outside the classroom (Science, Competency Goal 1).
Alignment
The following NCDPI Elementary Education Standards were met by:
NCDPI Standard 3, Indicator 1 was met by having a basic knowledge of life science concepts such as animals and their life cycles, mutations, and adaptations. Students learned about adaptations and the characteristics of living things by learning how to disguise a moth using different ways.
NCDPI Standard 10 was met by having active inquiry experiences for students by using questioning skills with students.
NCDPI Standard 11, Indicator 5 was met by incorporating technology skills in the science and social studies lessons through collecting data, organizing, and sorting data with the worksheet, Missing Moths.-
NCDPI Stndard 16, Indicator 8 was met by applying different ideas and using dissemination of those ideas with collaborating teachers.
NCDPI Standard 16, Indicator 9 was met by developing the lesson with the help of my collaborating teacher.
