Peer Ambassador (LUC Study Abroad)

The Beijing Center Peer Ambassador

The Beijing Center - Office of International Programs at Loyola University Chicago

Chicago, IL

January 2014-May 2015

Description: As the first Peer Ambassador for The Beijing Center, tasks varied daily. I mostly consulted students on how, when, and why to study abroad in China. Recruitment and outreach was a constant project. I assisted with the coordination of events to promote The Beijing Center and further knowledge related to China in general. In addition to events, I also created promotional materials such as flyers to hand out and post around Loyola University Chicago. Through editing and updating web content for the program, I now have experience in  the T4 web program. Each day was a new challenge and opportunity to reach out to students to gain and improve interest in studying abroad in China as well as maintaining the interest of program alumnae.

Reflection: During the Fall 2013 semester, I studied abroad through The Beijing Center for Chinese Studies and originally planned to stay for a year. Due to changes in course work, I had to return to my home university a semester earlier. However, becoming a Peer Ambassador has allowed me to stay connected to my experiences, reflect on them, and assist others who wish to gain similar experiences in their educational career. China has always been of great interest to me as well as international work. This position has allowed me to learn more about China and also learn about working with an international organization/program. There are cultural and political barriers and opportunities to navigate and understand to work effectively with consideration for another cultre.
