Dear Salpointe Sophomore Student,

You have been identified by a faculty member here on campus as a Sophomore that exemplifies the characteristics and skills that we are looking for in our Salpointe HOBY Leadership Representative.  Here are a few of the qualities that we feel you possess and lead us to believe that you would represent Salpointe in a wonderful manner:

• Outstanding oral and/or written communication skills
• Critical and/or creative thinking
• Creative problem solving
• Strong decision-making skills
• Sensitivity to the needs or concerns of others
• Charismatic personality (others gravitate towards him or her)
• Courage to speak out for one’s beliefs
• Courage to challenge authority
• Participation in community service activities

If you would like to be considered to represent Salpointe Catholic High School… please Complete Items 1 and 2 below and drop off in the Counseling Office.

Deadline to submit to Counseling Office:  Monday, December 1st. 

1. Essay Topic: (typed)  “In 200 words or less, please describe the most rewarding and challenging aspect of being a leader at Salpointe or in the community”

2. List of your Community or School Involvement

Unfortunately, Salpointe can only nominate 1 student to attend the conference and serve as our Sophomore representative.  We know that we have many qualified Sophomores and our committee will be hard pressed to select just one.  Do know that simply having your name put forward by a teacher or faculty member speaks loudly to your talents and character… and you should feel very proud. 

If you are chosen to represent Salpointe… you would attend the Arizona Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix from:

June 4^th to June 7^th this summer.

What is HOBY?

These are some of the words that students, schools, parents, alumni, volunteers and supporters use to describe Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY). What does HOBY mean to you?

Founded in 1958, HOBY’s mission is to provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential. HOBY programs are conducted annually throughout the United States, serving local and international high school students.

HOBY programs provide youth selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service-learning and motivation-building experiences. HOBY also provides adults with opportunities to make a significant impact on the lives of youth by volunteering. Over 4,000 committed HOBY volunteers plan and execute the programs each year, serving both at the local HOBY affiliate level and on HOBY’s Board of Trustees. Due to the selfless efforts of volunteers and the contributions of generous donors, nearly 9,000 students participate in HOBY programs annually.

Today, over 375,000 proud alumni make HOBY stronger than ever. HOBY alumni are leaders in their schools and communities, throughout the United States and the world, making a difference for others through service. Want to see the impact of HOBY firsthand? Some of the positive outcomes of participating in a HOBY program include:

• Improved critical thinking skills. By presenting multiple viewpoints on important issues, HOBY encourages participants to evaluate all issues from a critical perspective. Effective leaders make informed decisions.
• Enhanced leadership skills. HOBY’s phase-based curriculum, question-and-answer sessions with community leaders, small group discussions, interactive activities, hands-on service-learning experiences, and opportunities to engage in leadership roles enable participants to better understand leadership and begin to identify your own particular leadership strengths.
• Developing goal-setting skills. All aspects of the HOBY Leadership Seminar are geared to encourage participants to see leadership as a life-goal worth pursuing. At the conclusion of the HOBY Leadership Seminar, participants are encouraged to identify personal goals and commit to achieving one or more within the six months that follow.
• Realizing the importance of leadership. Through HOBY’s Leadership for Service program, particpants are challenged to complete 100 hours of service in your communities and to create service opportunities for others.
