The main goal and purpose of AP Information Night is to really encourage students and parents to be active participants in the registration process.  Our goal is to provide information about the pros and cons of taking an AP class so that you as a family will be able to make sound course registration decisions that align both with your students' ability and college/career aspirations.

We certainly want to emphasize the importance of finding balance in your life in terms of workload, curriculum rigor and extra-curricular activities.

Please do not hesitate to contact me (or have your child schedule an appointment) to discuss any registration questions.

AP Potential:

Using your PSAT scores to predict probability of success in a particular AP Course

AP Potential is a research-driven, free Web-based tool that will help you identify AP students. This powerful tool will enable you to identify whether your student is likely to succeed on AP Exams.

College Board research published in 1998 and 2006 shows strong correlations between students' PSAT/NMSQT scores and AP Exam results. These studies show that PSAT/NMSQT scores are strong predictors of students' AP Exam scores, and when used in conjunction with the more traditional signposts such as high school grades, grades in previous same-discipline course work, and the number of same-discipline courses a student has taken, can serve to provide reliable guidance in identifying whether students may be ready for the rigor of AP.

To see what your students' AP Expectancy is in any given subject - please click on the link below and then click on the AP Expectancy Link at the bottom of the page.  You will need your child's PSAT scores to do this.

Things to do when selecting courses:

1.) Have student think of or sketch out a "rough/preliminary schedule"

2.) Complete the yellow AP Questionnaire.  This will allow for parent/student discussion of what is reasonable in terms of stress, workload, extracurricular obligations, etc.

3.) Student can discuss options with current subject teacher.  Teachers are truly the best resource to tap into when trying to figure out what the expectations of the class will be and the rigors that may lie ahead.  Teachers also are the most familiar with the quality of work and level of engagement that the student has exhibited during the past year.

4.) Have student discuss options with ME (Sophomore Class Counselor).  sevans@salpointe.org  Or stop by counseling to make an appointment.

Registration Dates:

1.) Feb 9th - Counselors will come speak to each and every Sophomore World History class on February 9th

2.) Feb 11th or 12th - Teachers will spend a few minutes of their classtime discussing course options for next year in their subject matter.

3.) Feb 16th - Online Registration Window Opens

4.) Mar 4th - Online Registration Window Closes.  Students must have completed the online registration process no later than this date.

5.) Mar 4th - AP Information Questionnaire and any other registration forms need to be turned in to Counseling by this date.
