Arizona WebQuest

A WebQuest is a lesson plan completely done on-line. WebQuests are designed so that students can complete the assignment without aid from the teacher. Another distinguishing factor is that WebQuests are completed through using a computer. Students are asked to click on various links, find information, and then present their findings in a creative way. WebQuests are step-by-step so that the students can easily follow along at their own pace. WebQuests are another teaching method that enhances students' computer skills and integrates technology into the curriculum. Below is a WebQuest I have created for a fourth grade class.

Attention Arizonans

Introduction: Attention all fourth grade Arizonans! Your teacher has just informed you that on February 14th your school is going to have a huge birthday party for <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona. </st1:place></st1:State>Your class is on the decorating committee. Your job is to transform one gym wall into an Arizona Fast Fact wall. You only have a couple of days before the party, so you must get started quickly.

 By using the Internet, you will be able to make the Fast Fact wall informative and eye catching. All you have to do is complete the following steps.

1. Pick two <st1:State w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Arizona</st1:place></st1:State> state symbols that interest you                            

2. Research information about the symbols you chose                    

3. Write a descriptive paragraph about each   symbol                                                                                                   

4. Color or draw a picture of the symbol                                            

5. Create a poster of your completed symbols and paragraphs          

6. Complete the Arizona flag quiz

Step One: For this activity, your teacher will assign you one partner to work with. While in the lab, you and your partner need to share one computer.

 

Step Two: Then, you and your partner need to pick two of the following five symbols that you will do research on: State Bird, State Flower, State Mammal, State Reptile, State Amphibian.

 

Step Three: After you have picked which two you would like to research, go to Gila Ben's Website 

 

Step Four: One at a time, click on the symbols you chose to find more information about it.

 

Step Five: Then, print out each symbol worksheet that is located in the upper right hand corner. (How to print: Click on the image, and then click print).

 

Step Six: After the printing has stopped, you and your partner now need to read the paragraphs, highlight important information, and color the pictures to the best of your ability.

 

Step Seven: When the worksheets are complete, take out a piece of paper, and write a paragraph, using your own words, about your new found knowledge.

 

For more information on your symbols, go to the website SOS for Kids. Scroll down and click on State Symbols and/or State Flag to find more information. FInd two more facts that will help you write  your paragraph.

 

Next, go to Arizona's Kids Homepage to find at least one more piece of information. Just click on State Facts to read more.

 

Step Eight: After your paragraph is written, remember, spelling and grammar count, grab two poster boards from your teacher along with markers, colored pencils, etc.

 

Step Nine: On each poster board, do the following things:

 

1. Write the name of your symbol at the top. 

 

2. Underneath the heading, either draw or cut out the picture of your symbol. If you draw, use lots of color.

 

3. Below your drawing, rewrite the paragraph that you and your partner wrote concering your symbol. The paragraph should be neat and legible. (You will receive a grade, so do the best you can).

 

4. On the back, write you and your partner's names.

 

5. Then, paper clip your worksheets to the poster board.

 

Step Ten: When each of the poster boards are complete, set them aside and follow these instructions.

 

Step Eleven: Go to the link Arizona Flag Printout. Print the flag worksheet. I would like everyone to do this individually.

 

Step Twelve: Then, I want you to color the flag, read/highlight the paragraph, and answer the three questions.

 

 *Our state flag is so important and I really want you to understand it, that is why I would like you to end with this activity.

 

Step Thirteen: Afterwards, write your name on the paper and hand it in to me for grading. Do not cheat! Work on this assignment by yourself.

 

Step Fourteen: When everyone has completed all of these tasks, each group will share their poster boards with the class.

 

Step Fifteen: Then, we will go to the gym and hang up our posters for the party.

You will be evaluated, individually, in the following areas.

 

1. Participation: Did you work with your partner nicely? Did you follow all the directions? Did you share the work load? (5 pts.)

 

2. Research Component: Did you color the pictures on the worksheet to the best of your ability? Did you highlight the information that you read? Did you write your names on the back of your paper? Did you go to the correct places on the websites without going places you were not suppose to? (15 pts.)

 

3. Writing Component: Did you write at least a five sentence paragraph, using your own words, for each symbol? Was the paragraph fourth grade writing, meaning you wrote in complete sentences, used descriptive words, etc? Was it neat and legible? (25 pts.)

 

4. Visual Component: Did your poster board follow the given criteria? Was it creative and visually appealing? Did you spend a decent amount of time on it, giving it your best effort? Are you proud to have it hanging on the wall for a decoration? (30 pts.)

 

5. Quiz Component: Did you answer the three questions on your own? Did you write in complete sentences? Did you color the picture according to the directions given? Did you actively read the paragraph by highlighting the answers as you found them? Did you write your name on the paper with the date? (25 pts.)

 

This assignment is worth a total of 100 pts.

Give yourselves a big round of applause! Your hard worked really paid off. The Arizona Fast Fact wall looks amazing! The party is going to be a huge success and everyone will admire your decorations! Now all that is left to do, is sing Happy Birthday to <st1:State w:st="on">Arizona</st1:State> and eat birthday cake. Enjoy!
