The following resource manual teaches how to adjust the computer settings to meet the needs of students with disabilities. This manual makes the computer accessible to those who have hearing, vision, and physical impairments. These easy to follow steps help those using Windows XP in the school setting.

<b> Adjust the Double-Click Speed</b>

  • In the Control panel, click on Printers and Other Hardware.
  • Then, drag the double-click speed slider in the double-click speed area to the right end of the slide.
  • Double-click the test area.
  • Drag the double click speed slider to the left along the slide until the folder opens when you double-click the test area.

 

<b>Turn on and Use Clicklock</b>

  • Point to Turn on Clicklock in the Clicklock area in the Mouse Properties dialog box. (Again, this is in Control Panel under Printers and Other Hardware).
  • Click Turn on Clicklock.
  • Right click an open area of the desktop, point to New, click Text document, double-click the New Text Document icon on the desktop, and then type, Clicklock allows you to lock a mouse button and select or drag text, in the New Text Document-Notepad window. Move the insertion point to the beginning of the text.
  • Position the mouse pointer to the left of the word, Clicklock, in the document, hod down the left mouse button for several seconds, release the mouse button, drag the insertion point to the right to highlight the word, Clicklock, and then click the left mouse button.

<b>Adjusting the Pointer Speed</b>

  • Click the Pointer Options tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box.
  • Drag the Pointer speed slider in the Motion area to the left or right end of the slide.
  • Experiment with the pointer speed until you find the pointer speed that works best for you.

<b>Turning on MouseKeys</b>

  • Click the accessibility options icon in the control panel window.
  • Point to accessibility options icon in the accessibility options window.
  • Click the accessibility options icon.
  • Point to the mouse tab.
  • Click the mouse tab, click Use Mousekeys, and then click the Apply button.
  • If a circle with a slash symbol displays over the mouse icon in the notification area, press the NUM LOCK key to remove the symbol.
  • Use the 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 numeric keys on the numeric keypad to move the mouse pointer to the Use Mousekeys check box and then press the 5 key to remove the check mark from the check box.
  • Using the numeric keys on the numeric keypad, move the mouse pointer to the Apply button and then click the Apply button to turn off the MouseKeys.

 

<b>Changing Mouse Button Configuration</b>

  • Click the Mouse icon in the Printers and Other Hardware window, which is in the Control Panel. Point to Switch primary and secondary buttons.
  • Click Switch primary and secondary buttons.
  • Experiment with the left and right mouse buttons until you are comfortable with the Left-handed configuration.
  • Using the right mouse button, click Switch primary and secondary buttons.

Adjusting the Keyboard Repeat Delay

  • In the Control Panel, click the Printers and Other Hardware icon
  • Point to the Keyboard icon in the Printers and Other Hardware window
  • Click the Keyboard icon
  • Point to the Repeat delay slider in the Character repeat area in the Keyboard Properties dialog box
  • Drag the repeat slider to the left, click on the text box, and press while holding down the lowercase X key on the keyboard to test the speed
  • Then, drag the Repeat delay slider to the right end, click the text box, removes the x's, and press while holding down the X key to test this speed
  • Experiment with the Repeat delay slider until you find the one you like

Adjusting the Keyboard Repeat Rate

  • In the keyboard properties area point to the Repeat rate slider under the Character repeat area.
  • Drag the repeat rate slider to the left end of the slide, click the text box, remove the x's and then press while holding down the Z key to test the rate
  • Drag the repeat rate slider to the right end, click the text box, remove the z's in the box, and press while holding down the Z key to test the repeat rate
  • Experiment with the Repeat rate slider until you find the one you like

Adjusting the Cursor Blink Rate

  • In the Keyboard Properties point to the Cursor blink rate slider in the Cursor Blink rate area
  • Drag the Cursor blink rate slider slowly to the left so that you can see the speed adjustments
  • Drag the Cursor blink rate slider to the right end of the slide
  • Experiment with the Cursor blink rate slider until you find the one that you like
  • Click the OK button in the Keyboard Properties dialog box

 

To Turn On the Snap To Feature

  • In the Mouse Properties dialog box click Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box in the Snap To area.
  • Point to the OK button in the Mouse Properties dialog box
  • Click the OK button to close the Mouse Properties dialog box.
  • Click the Mouse icon in the Printers and Other Hardware window
  • Click the Pointer Options tab and then click Automatically move pointer to the default button in a dialog box to remove the check mark

To Turn on the High Contrast Feature

  • Click the display tab in the Accessibility Options dialog box.
  • Point to Use High Contrast in the High Contrast Area
  • Click use High Contrast. Click the Apply button
