WebQuest

A WebQuest is a lesson plan completely done on-line. WebQuests are designed so that students can complete the assignment without aid from the teacher. Another distinguishing factor is that WebQuests are completed through using a computer. Students are asked to click on various links, find information, and then present their findings in a creative way. WebQuests are step-by-step so that the students can easily follow along at their own pace. WebQuests are another teaching method that enhances students' computer skills and integrates technology into the curriculum. Below is a WebQuest I have created for a third grade class.

BATS

</B> Walking home from school one day, you tell your friends that you want to go explore the bat caves. Your friends think this sounds cool and want to come with you. However, your older brother overhears the conversation and starts telling you scary stories about bats. When you go home and tell your mom the stories your brother told you she says they are not true. You are now confused and do not know who to believe. So, you decide you want to find the facts from the myths before you embark on your journey. </FONT>

<b><big><font color=navy>Task:</b></big></font color=navy>

question.GIF By using the Internet, you will be able to figure out what is true and what is not true by completing the following four tasks:
1. Fill out the bat anatomy worksheet
2. Complete the vampire bat jigsaw puzzle
3. Take the myth or fact bat quiz
4. Create a poster of your favorite myth or fact

<b><big><font color=navy>Process:</b></big></font color=navy>

comp.GIF Step One: Your teacher will assign you one partner to work with. Each of you will need a computer so sit next to each other.

Step Two: One partner will click on the link http://www.cdli.ca/CITE/bat_anatomy.PDF</FONT> and print the worksheet. The other partner will go to http://members.aol.com/bats4kids2/look.htm</FONT> </A></A></FONT>where both of you will find the answers to the worksheet.

Step Three: Together you will fill out the worksheet. One person will write the answers, while the other is telling the answers.

Step Four: After completing the worksheet raise your hand so the teacher can check for completion.

Step Five: After the teacher checks the worksheet, one partner will click on the link http://www.kidzone.ws/animals/bats/activities.htm</FONT> and together you will use the new knowledge about bat anatomy to complete the jigsaw puzzle. Click on the On-Line Jigsaw Puzzle link.

Step Six: After the jigsaw puzzle is completed one partner will go to http://lhs.berkeley.edu/BatQuiz/BatQuiz.html.</FONT> Click on the Start the Bat Quiz link. By helping each other, take the true and false quiz to find out how much you know about bats. Take the quiz until you and your partner get all of the questions correct.

Step Seven: Now, as partners, choose your favorite myth or fact from the quiz.

Step Eight: You will then raise your hand and the teacher will give you a posterboard with markers. You and your partner must use creativity and create a poster on the myth or fact that you chose. (Remember: You will be graded on how creative you are. Make sure you neatly write the myth or fact on the paper. Also, there should be at least one picture.)

Step Nine: Each group will share their poster with the class.</FONT>

<b><big><font color=navy>Evaluation:</b></big></font color=navy>

You will be evaluated individually in the following four areas:</B>

1. Participation: Did you help your partner out? Did you follow all the directions? Did you stay on task the entire time? (10 pts.)

2. Anatomy Worksheet: Did you and your partner complete the worksheet? Did you get it stamped by the teacher? Is it neat and legible? (25 pts.)

3. Myth or Fact Quiz: Did you take the quiz? Did you keep taking it until you got all of them correct? (15 pts.)

4. Poster: Were you creative? Did you write the myth or fact? Is there a picture on your poster? (25 pts.)

5. Presentation: Did each of you speak about your poster? Did you tell why you chose the myth or fact? Did you make eye contact with the audience? Did you speak slowly and fluently? Did you show your poster? (25)

There is a total of 100 points possible.</I></B>

<b><big><font color=navy>Conclusion:</b></big></font color=navy>

Hip! Hip! Horray!

</B>Now that you know all about bats you are now ready to explore the bat caves. After telling your brother the truth about bats, he decides that he wants to come with you and your friends. So, grab your hiking boots and go to http://www.torstar.com/rom/batcave/cave/index.html to explore a bat cave.
