THE MASTER THIEF BREAKS INTO THE MUSEUM

Brainy, the Master Thief, breaks into the South Australian museum at 11:00 at night because it is dark then and no one can see him in his black clothes.

Task One:

  • Is it 11:00 AM or PM?

Task Two:

  • Brainy looks around and sees that there are 24 security cameras. He knows it will take him 14 seconds to put each camera out of action, so he uses his nifty new calculator to see how many seconds he needs. How many SECONDS altogether does Brainy need to stop the cameras from working?

Task Three:

  • Once he has done this, Brainy sneaks down the corridor and looks for the door marked "Keep out Brainy." This door is locked with a time switch and it will only open at quarter past, half past, or a quarter to the hour, otherwise the alarm will go off. Brainy looks at his watch and sees that it is now 11:07. How many MINUTES does he need to wait before it will open again and he can enter the room without make the alarm ring?

Task Four:

  • Brainy waits until it is a quarter past eleven and then when he can go inside he quickly enters the room and looks around for the ring he wants to steal. All he can see are lots of other doors in this room. He is running out of time. 'Which door," he thinks to himself? Brainy allows 10 seconds to go to each door and check inside each room. There are 12 doors altogether. How many MINUTES will it take him to check all of the doors?

Task Five:

  • Once he has done this Brainy looks at his watch and sees it is now 11:17 pm, so he sits down and waits until it is half past eleven. Brainy knows that at 11:30 pm guards all have cakes and biscuits for supper, so he waits until then to steal what it is that he wants so badly. How many MINUTES does he have to wait?

If you have answered all the tasks, your group can sit quietly and wait. Check your answers.
