The Activity

Solving the Math Curse

Grade Level(s): 4-6

My own creation

Students learn how to solve everyday math problems that they have or will encounter.

Objectives: Apply critical thinking skills to solve everyday math problems. Also, to realize that there are many ways to solve problems.

Materials:

  • The book: Math Curse
  • Overhead transparencies and overhead pens
  • Different math manipulatives (ex: a clock, cut outs of paper shirts, ect...)

Plan:

  1. Organize the class into groups of three
  2. Give each group a copy of the book, one overhead pen and one of the overhead transparencies
  3. Direct each group to one of the math problems in the book and ask them to solve
  4. Have each group write the problem, how they solved it, and the final answer on the overhead transparencies
  5. Let each group present their problem to the class and have them explain their solution

Comments: This is a great activity for the older children. If you do not have a copy of the book for each group, just write out the problems on seperate pieces of paper and hand those out instead.
