Describe

The artifact is an Action Plan for Students with Disabilities.  I collected the information for this plan in the Spring of 2013.

Analyze

ELCC Standard 6.1 – Understand the Larger Context and ELCC Standard 6.2 – Respond to the Larger Context.  The Action Plan is developed to help students with disabilities to increase one (1) proficiency level on the NYS ELA exam. Administrators and teachers will be involved in weekly common planning time that will focus on effective teaching, Common Core Learning Standards in ELA alignment, curriculum mapping, and analyzing student work and data.  Teachers will be involved in providing after school tutoring for students that are preparing to take the NYS ELA exam in April.  In order for any program to be successful, parents need to be involved.  There will be communication with parents through emails and phone calls.  Workshops will be set up for parents which center on teenage development, communication with teenagers, attendance issues and recognizing when a child is in need.

ELCC Standard 6.3- Influence the Larger Context. Resources will be made available through Title 1 Funding.  Funds will be used for supervisors, teachers, and guidance counselors per session for tutoring, and curriculum revision.   The funds will also be used to purchase supplemental textbooks to enhance classroom instruction.

Appraise

This paper demonstrates that I was able to collect relevant student data and connect it to larger school goals, create an action plan that addresses the needs of a specific population, and use data to monitor and confirm the success of the plan.

Transform

As a future administrator, I have learned that there are many different aspects that need to be considered when putting a plan into action.  One aspect is writing the plan was time consuming. In order for the plan to be written correctly, designing a schedule and adhering to it needs to be implemented.  Another aspect is executing change within the school. Change is more likely to happen if the whole school community is on board.  Enabling all members of the school community (staff, students, and parents) opportunities to lead or contribute to the activities in the action plan is one way of making change happen. Teachers have to be prepared to learn new techniques and styles of teaching, parents need to get involved in their child’s education and students need to believe in themselves and put their best foot forward. Having a team approach supports new approaches to become embedded in school life.
