Reflection

Through Lehman’s Educational Leadership Program, I have developed into a competent, caring, and qualified leader. While completing the various projects and coursework throughout the past two years, I have learned a great deal about how diverse schools really are, especially in New York City. Diversity comes in many forms, including English language proficiency levels and learning styles. I have learned how important it is to study school-wide academic and demographic data to make decisions in my school as a leader. Leaders must be responsive to the data and make changes as needed. I have also learned how important it is to encourage teachers to use data effectively in their classrooms to make class level decisions for teaching and learning.

During our coursework, many of our projects incorporated group work. Although I have always appreciated the value of group work and how it could bring people together to help each other, I also understand its challenges. However, as a school leader, I know it is important to listen to the ideas of others and gain multiple perspectives when making decisions. The school does not simply belong to the leader. It belongs to the entire community, so those community members’ ideas should be represented in new programs and initiatives.

Most importantly, it is essential that all stakeholders in a school community feel valued and respected. This includes all staff members, students, and community members. I understand how important it is to establish a positive culture in a school as a leader and ensure that all stakeholders are nurtured and developed.
