Reflection on the Internship Experience - Module 8

The attached paper is my final reflection upon my administrative internship through Grand Canyon University. This experience has greatly added to my foundation being laid for an effective career as a school leader. The tasks and activities covered by the course syllabus and my internship plan covered all six areas addressed in the national ISLLC standards and the specified APAS standards, with a few more impactful than the others. I spent a majority of the time supervising an after-school program which addresses ISLLC Standard 3; function A and APAS standard 4: the administrator manages services, programs, and operations in a safe, efficient, manner/environment. Close collaboration with district leaders nurtured and fostered a culture of collaboration, trust, learning, and high expectations (ISLLC Standard 2; function A), and in all of my duties and activities I was afforded the opportunity to act in an ethical manner with fairness (ISSLC Standard 5; function B).

Attached is my completed Pre-Self Evaluation of the ISLLC Standards. Working through the self evaluation clearly highlighted expectations of a quality administrator. The ultimate goal would be to have "Strong Evidence" of each listed disposition, yet as I am not in an administrative position, some dispositions have to be marked as "Limited Evidence. This assessment truly correlates to all of the specified Arizona and National standards as each is individually evaluated in the assessment, but I have chosen a selection which are integral within the assessment and are clearly addressed. These specified standards are:

AZ- Arizona Professional Administrative Standards

Standard 1: The administrator facilitates the development, articulation, implementation, and management of an organization's mission. The performance assessment shall measure the extent to which the administrator:

Performance Indicator 2: Promotes support for and fulfillment of the organization's mission;

Formative Assessment (Mid-Term Formative Evaluation Form)-Module 4

The following mid-term, formative evaluation is a good indicator of my abilities at this point in the internship. This listing of qualities would be beneficial for all teachers, not only those wishing to pursue administrative careers.  Although all of my ratings were satisfactory or higher, some issues need to be addressed prior to the summative evaluation and on throughout my career.  I don't discuss educational issues to a large degree with colleagues. Our days are so stressed for time that true debates and discussions don't seem to happen. I need to entertain more of these discussions in order to learn from my colleagues and do demonstrate my understanding of these issues. I also need to pursue more professional knowledge and to advance my knowledge of content matter through workshops and seminars.  These activities will also work to increase my professional network.

This evaluation addresses each of the specified Arizona standards and the USA ISLLC Standards as the instrument covers a complete spectrum of qualities and characteristics. However, a select group of standards truly stand out: my ability to complete projects in a timely manner (AZ Standard 4; Performance Indicator 5); my ability to collaborate with colleagues and others (USA ISLLC Standard 1; Function A); my commitment to ethical behavior (USA ISLLC Standard 5; Function B); and my advocacy on behalf of children (USA ISLLC Standard 6; Function B).

Attached is the summative evaluation report for my internship and GCU course EDA 580. Personal/Professional Characteristics is the section most highly rated by my mentor and is illustrative of my sincere sense of honor and duty as an educator that one must lead foremost by example, and this is representative of USA ISSLC Standard 5, Function B, to model principles and ethical behavior. The second highest rated section was Managerial Qualities and addresses the Arizona Standard 2, Performance Indicator 1 (effectively manages services, programs, operations, and resources).

Attached is my internship log for course EDA 580. This was a very rewarding course and I garnered much guidance and practical experience through the process. The activities I participated in truly spanned all ISSLC standards and those specified as Arizona and national standards for this assignment.  The majority of my activities entailed supervision/monitoring of school programs to ensure safe and effective student environments. This is most closely representative of USA - ISSLC Standard 3, Function A. The log itself is documentation of my beginning steps in professional development as an administrator and reflect the Arizona Standard 1, Performance Indicator 9: Documentation of professional development.

The following attachments reflect upon a decision making process I encountered during this internship. I needed to identify, frame, and solve a problem affecting our middle school's volunteer program (AZ Standard 4, Performance Indicator 3). In this process I recognized some potential liabilities (AZ Standard 2, Performance Indicator 4) and needed to revise and improve internal communications in our district (AZ Standard 3, Performance Indicator 4 & USA ISLLC Standard 1, Function E).  This decision making process helped improve the function of our volunteer program, protecting the safety and welfare of our students and staff (USA ISLLC Standard 3, Function C).
