Outreach

Among our outreach activities...

(1) Students created brochures illustrating maple syrup facts that were distributed at all outreach activities.

(2) Students sold maple syrup products, including maple cotton candy, at the NYS Farm Show.

(3) FFA students served up a great pancake breakfast for members of our community.

(4) Project students were interviewed by RFD-TV and WMCR Radio.  Several news articles about our grant appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard, the Oneida Dispatch, the Country Folks Magazine and the NYS Ag Ed Newsletter.

(5) SVCS hosted a contingent of students from Japan, showing them our maple sugaring process and serving them a delicious lunch of pancakes, sausage, and of course, maple syrup.

(6) Students opened the sugar house for the four days of the Mohawk Maple Producers Maple Sap Run, demonstrating the maple syrup production process and selling maple products.

(7) Students demonstrated making maple cotton candy at the Tractor Supply Company in Oneida.  Our maple syrup products were also for sale.

(8) Students visited the NYS Maple Museum in Croghan to learn more about the history of maple sugaring.  They were able to tell of their learning experiences through our grant.

(9) Elementary students toured the sugar house and learned how sap is made into syrup.  Everyone enjoyed a sweet maple sugar treat.

(10) Our grant project was described on the "Journey North" website and we were contacted by a school in Maine that wants to know more about our project and continue correspondence with our students.

(11) Two schools in Florida want to video conference with us about our project.  Unfortunately they do not currently have the necessary infrastructure.  We will continue our relationship with them and hopefully video conference in the 2007-2008 academic year.

(12) We are discussing the possibility of a video conference with a school in Oklahoma.
