Rationale
Context: This project was completed during the Fall semester, 2005 at ASU, for the course CI3110, Social Studies methods. As a component of the course a service learning project was completed with a group of second grade students at Green Valley Elementary school. It was through the help of myself, the teacher, parent and grandparent volunteers and of course the second graders, that this project was possible. Over the month of November, students and I sewed five days a week for one hour and fifteen minutes, rotating through three small groups. It was with a lot of hard work, determination and loving hearts that this blanket was created.
Impact: Through this experience, students learned the importance of helpfulness, caring, responsibility, generosity, determination and taking your time on detailed work. I would use this service learning project to promote community involvement and parent participation in the classroom. This lesson also helped to encourage students to become involved in volunteer services as well as activities outside of the classroom. In addition to the lessons learned by my students, this project helped to better some child in our community and hopefully provide them with a warm, cheerful, loving blanket, so that they might feel the love that these students poured into making it.
