Video Production

Rationale

Context:  This artifact was created during the Fall semester, 2005, in my technology class.  I worked with three other students in the class using Macintosh video productions.  I used a video camera to film the video footage and i-movie to do all movie editing.  The idea for the video was derived from the book Al Capone Does My Shirts that had been read during my Reading 4030 class.

Impact:  I would allow students to film similar video productions after reading a novel and discussing the major themes the emanate throughout the text. This would allow students to construct meaning from the text that was just read.  Students would learn how to properly use technology as well as incorporating literature into our technology class.  Students would work in small cooperative groups allowing for teamwork skills to develop. Students would rotate use of the technology to assure every student has an opportunity to build competency.  My video production would serve as a completed example for the students to view, as well as an example of how to use the technology properly.

Alignment:

  • NETS-T Standard II-A:  This project will help meet the needs for a variety of kinds of learners at the elementary level.  Students would be able to experience writing, reading, acting, hands-on engagement activities as well as working with a variety of materials and having a self-selected topic allowing for creativity.
  • NETS-T Standard  II-E:  I have met this standard by providing a completed example to use in teaching students the steps required in creating their own video production.
  • NETS-T Standard II-D:  This standard has been met through the use of rotational jobs allowing each individual on the team to experience and learn to work all of the required material.
  • NCDPI Standard 1, Indicator 5:  This standard has been met through the use of construction meaning from a required reading text and creating an original, creative video production.
  • NCDPI Standard 8, Indicator 3:  Students will be encouraged to think critically about what they read as well as what they wrote as a script and produced on film.
