Engagement Key

  1. Through my engaged learning experience at WGN Radio 720AM, I have shown a commitment to learning, justice, and faith. Before my internship I did not have any experience in a newsroom. The only knowledge I had about a newsroom was what I had been taught in class or seen on TV. In my School of Communication classes I was taught that each newsroom operates differently. Through my internship I not only learned how their newsroom operates but at the same time improved my writing, reporting, and editing skills. In addition, through my internship, my values of social justice have been strengthened. Ethically reporting stories has remained a central importance during my internship. As a reporter there are times you receive information from a single source. However, it is important to fact-check sources and confirm information before it is broadcasted. As an aspiring journalist I have learned your credibility in reporting news means everything when gaining an audience. Through my co-curricular involvement in Best Buddies since my freshman year, my friendship with Michael has strengthened my faith. Michael has taught me to be patient, kind, humble, and grateful; which are all values cherished in Catholicism. As a senior reflecting on my Loyola experience, I cannot imagine my four years without my friendship with Michael.

  1. The artifacts uploaded support this claim as the final paper submitted for my internship class clearly exemplifies the priceless experience of working in a newsroom. Further, my experiences field reporting for the radio station shows how I can accurately describe scenes without being too flamboyant, while at the same time giving character to a story. The pictures of Michael and I show close Michael and I became over four years. Plus, one just cannot fake that huge smile on his face. Michael’s positive attitude helps me remember that all of the struggles I might go through in life are just a part of a larger journey.

  1. My curricular and co-curricular experiences relate to one another in my Loyola experience as both promote social justice. My internship at the radio station instilled in me even greater values of ethics and moral obligations to others, and to myself. As Michael’s Best Buddy, I have gained qualities that are just not teachable in a classroom. Having the opportunity to interact with Michael has taught me not to take anything for granted, cherish the simple moments, and to be grateful for all the good things in my life.
